According to its back cover, “The Baobab and the Mango Tree” is a thought-provoking and courageous book that brings the big questions about development to a wide audience of college students and interested readers.
Honestly, it’s not a great book. I think the logic is weak and I don’t really buy the conclusions. However, it’s well written, a pretty quick read, and it touches on a lot of ideas that are frequently mentioned when discussing international development. It’s worth the time it takes to read it, especially if you’re new to this stuff.

Sorry, King Rat – to be eligible you need to follow the rule I laid out in the entry.
I just recently started reading your blog. It has been a great read. I liked the piece about Doing Good and Doing Bad, and would love to read more about these types of things. While the Kenyan Economist, I believe is off base, there is a lot that should be paid attention to there, such as not shipping goods into a country when they can be purchased locally, helping to build the local economy while providing aid. Sometimes that isn’t possible, but it is too often overlooked. Keep up the great work. I have a lot of back reading to do on your blog. 🙂
Hi. I would be interested in reading this book. Even though your review is mixed, it sounds like it still might be worth the time investment.
What I like the most so far is reading your jargon of the day posts. Those are both informative and entertaining.
I would also like some kind of posts about humanitarian organizations.
Thanks for the giveaway.
