Here’s a nice list of things you can do instead, excerpted from About.com:
1. Seek fiscal sponsorship from an existing NGO.
2. Volunteer for a non-profit that is doing something similar to what you have in mind.
3. Start a local chapter of a national non-profit.
5. Form or join a giving circle.
6. Set up a donor-advised fund which makes grants to charitable causes of your choice.
8. Organize support for a cause at an online social networking site.
I particularly like numbers 2, 5, and 6. Volunteering for an NGO, or getting heavily involved in fundraising, give you the chance to learn the ins and outs of the situation before you try to run something yourself.
I love it. I remember sitting in Cambridge, having local charity/nonprofit/projects pitch to our class last year, and thinking, shit, the last thing these folks should be doing is starting is another NGO/Charity.
I’m of two minds. I feel that the NGO world does need creative disruption to stay innovative, hungry, focused. So new NGO entrants are good. The best example I know is one I’ve worked extensively with: Engineers Without Borders Canada (www.ewb.ca). Phenomenal (and young) organization that has clearly challenged perspectives on Canadian-led development.
On the other hand, established organizations often have a better understanding of the complexities surrounding their work, as well as how to effectively deliver solutions.
Experience vs. staleness I guess.
What new NGOs should be constantly asking is: can I have more impact doing this than by joining or donating to NGO x or y? Unfortunately with NGOs, it’s pretty easy to stay afloat if people _think_ you’re providing value. But to really provide value, the question really needs to be asked.
Brendan
this is probably overly-cynical but there are alot of people who start NGOs just so they can get on Oprah. Coming from a place like Afghanistan…it gets old. But then I think that some of the best NGOs started off with one individual’s idea that s/he can help so why should I be rude if that person came late to Afghanistan (not pre-2003)?
My idealism battles with my cynicism often.
homeinkabul – I think ego has an awful lot to do with starting many new NGOs, even when it stems from a sincere desire to help as well. It’s a lot cooler to be president of something tiny than to be one more volunteer in something big.
[…] why this post on “What to do instead of starting an NGO” caught my attention (NGO, or non-governmental organization, is almost synonymous with NPO, […]
