KAZAKHSTAN: Kazakh health officials have traced an outbreak of plague to desert gerbils near the village of Zhangeldi in the Mangystau region of western Kazakhstan. Three local residents acquired the disease after eating infected camel meat. Officials are continuing to investigate how the camel transmitted the disease, since all camels in the region received vaccinations (News at a Glance, 31 July 2003). Authorities are vaccinating local residents against the disease.
